The premier added that the country “has no reason to continue to depend on the dollar” and the Central Bank of Malaysia is already working on the possibility of negotiating between countries using the Malaysian ringgit and the Chinese yuan in trade. According to the agency, Ibrahim paid an official visit to China last week.
Ibrahim had already proposed the creation of such a fund during his tenure as finance minister in the 1990s, but now, he says, “when the economies of China, Japan and other countries are strong, we should discuss this.” “At least consider the issue of the Asian Monetary Fund and, secondly, the use of our currencies,” he said.
In February of this year, the Malaysian prime minister also proposed to revive the idea of the Asian Monetary Fund. Then the Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times, citing the words of Ibrahim wrotethat the minister proposes to include Malaysia, China, Japan and South Korea in the Asian fund.
Then he said that “we must have our own domestic, regional and Asian forces, not necessarily for competition, but to create a buffer zone” from economic crises.
