Chile completes work on draft constitution

The Constituent Assembly of Chile adopted a draft of a new constitution, which will be subject to a referendum.
According to the body, “the plenum of the constituent assembly approved on Monday, October 30, the draft of the new constitution. After eight months of work, the text is ready to be submitted to the President of the Republic, who must schedule a referendum for December 17.”
33 members of the assembly voted for approval of the text, 17 voted against. The project was supported by representatives of the right-wing opposition, including the Republican Party and the “Chile, Forward” coalition. The left-wing ruling coalition Unite for Chile opposed the approval.
On October 29, Activa published a survey forecast that about 70% of citizens would vote against the new constitution. Critics of the text believe that it does not ensure the social rights of citizens. Particularly indignant was the clause about “protecting the life of the one who is born.” Opponents of the new text believe it could lead to a complete ban on abortion, which is currently legal in Chile only in cases of rape, a threat to the life of the mother or the unfitness of the fetus.
This is the second attempt to develop a new constitution after Chilean citizens voted in a referendum in October 2020 to change the country’s basic law. Almost 80% of voters supported this proposal. However, Chileans expressed dissatisfaction with the work of the constituent assembly
