Chernyshenko announced Russia’s readiness to participate in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Vietnam

Russia is ready to take part in the construction of nuclear power plants in Vietnam, both large and small capacity, upon a corresponding request from the Vietnamese side, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said during his visit to the republic.

“Russia is ready to participate and help Vietnam if a decision is made to build nuclear power plants, both large and small,” – leads Chernyshenko’s words TASS agency.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister believes that nuclear energy could play an important role in ensuring Vietnam’s energy sovereignty. “The adoption of such a decision will allow Vietnam to come close to achieving the goal of climate neutrality,” the politician said.

February 6, Director General of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev toldthat the state corporation is close to concluding agreements on the construction of nuclear power plants with 3-4 new countries. On the same day, the press service of Rosatom reported that Russia and Myanmar had signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the peaceful atom. From the message of the state corporation, it followed that under this agreement, the countries would conduct joint activities aimed at implementing the project of a low-power nuclear power plant (ASMM) in Myanmar.

Also in February, the press service of Rosatom reportedthat the construction of the Paks-2 NPP in Hungary with the participation of the Russian side will begin in 2024. At the end of August 2022, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued Russian state corporationRosatom» permission to build power units No. 5 and No. 6 using Russian technologies. As a result of the construction of new units, the capacity of the Paks station will increase from the current 2,000 megawatts to 4,400 megawatts.

In December last year, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak informedthat Rosatom sent documents to participate in the tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Saudi Arabia. He then recalled that Rosatom is implementing projects for the construction of nuclear power plants in a number of other countries – China, India, Bangladesh, Turkey, Hungary, Egypt. In particular, in May 2022, the “first concrete” was poured at power unit No. 4 of the Xudapu NPP in China. In July 2022, the official start was given to the construction of the fourth power unit of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey and the construction of the first power unit of the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt began. Novak also added that plans are being discussed to build a second nuclear power plant in Turkey.

April 6 Dmitry Chernyshenko arrived on a two-day working visit to Vietnam. The office of the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the politician laid wreaths at the monument to the Fallen Heroes and the mausoleum of the first president of North Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, and also examined the memorial complex.

In addition, Chernyshenko, on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, presented the Order of Friendship to the Chairman of the Committee for the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, Major General Bui Hai Son, for special merits in the development of relations between Russia and Vietnam in the field of science, education and healthcare. Chernyshenko drew attention to the good attitude towards Russia and its culture, and also noted the efforts to preserve the historical memory of relations between Russia and Vietnam.

The fact that Chernyshenko will visit Vietnam on April 6-7, earlier reported in the Russian government. They noted that on April 6, Chernyshenko would take part in the plenary sessions of the Russian-Vietnamese intergovernmental commission and the Russian-Vietnamese business forum, during which issues of cooperation between the two countries would be discussed. As a result of these events, several agreements will be signed.
