CEC confirms receipt of requests from new regions to hold elections in their territories

The leaders of four new regions of Russia proposed to the Central Election Commission (CEC) to hold elections in their territories. This was stated by the chairman of the commission Ella Pamfilova, writes TASS.

Pamfilova said that the regional commissions accepted documents on holding elections in six regions from 15 candidates. “As of today, 15 candidates have been nominated in six regions: 14 from political parties, one is a self-nominated candidate,” the chairman said at a CEC meeting.

Earlier about the desire to hold elections informed “Kommersant”, citing sources in the commission, the information was then confirmed by the deputy chairman of the CEC Nikolai Bulaev. It was clarified that the requests were sent by the heads of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

All four annexed territories are under martial law (MA), which was introduced immediately after their annexation to Russia in the fall of 2022. According to the new amendments, which were approved by the Federation Council on May 24, in order to hold elections in regions with MA, the commission must consult with FSB and Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The heads of subjects with a valid EP have the right not earlier than 130 days and not later than 90 days before voting day to send a proposal to the CEC to hold elections or a referendum. This year, the Single Voting Day (EDV) will take place on September 10th. After the announcement of the date of the elections, the nomination of candidates will begin.
