Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died at the age of 79 in a hospital in Dubai after a long illness. His reign came at a dramatic time in history, linked both to the conflict with India and the American-led “war on terror” in Afghanistan.

Pervez Musharraf, a four-star general, ruled Pakistan for nearly a decade after seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1999.

The former general suffered from amyloidosis, a rare disease that causes organ damage. He was bedridden and wheelchair-bound for a long time, according to Al Jazeera.

In a brief statement released by the Pakistani military’s media division, senior military personnel expressed their “sincere condolences” on the death of the former military ruler: “May Allah bless the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family.”

Former commando and veteran of two Indo-Pakistani wars, Pervez Musharraf, became president in the latest in a string of military coups that have rocked Pakistan since its founding amid the bloody partition of the former British India in 1947.

Musharraf came to power by overthrowing then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. After the coup, a state of emergency was declared in Pakistan, the military suspended the constitution and legislature, and the central and regional governments were dissolved.

Pervez Musharraf ruled a nuclear weapons state after his 1999 coup due to tensions with India, a nuclear proliferation scandal and insurgency.

Having come to power, the general promised to put an end to corruption and, in international affairs, to start negotiations with India on the Kashmir problem and with Afghanistan on the fight against terrorism. Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ruled that General Musharraf is given until October 2002 to return the country to democratic rule. At the same time, in the spring of 2002, a referendum was held in Pakistan on the appointment of Pervez Musharraf as president of the country for a period of five years – his appointment was approved by 97.97% of voters.

The President-General survived several attempts on his life. So, on December 25, 2003, a presidential motorcade passing through Rawalpindi was attacked by two trucks filled with explosives. However, Musharaaf managed not to suffer during the attack, although about a dozen people became victims of the attack.

He stepped down in 2008, facing possible impeachment. His decision to leave the presidency under the guarantee of his own security was also influenced by the positions of Western countries (including the United States), which refused to support him, and the position of the Pakistani army, which refused to take any action to protect the president if he was impeached. Musharraf went into exile.

The Special Court of Pakistan sentenced Musharraf in absentia on December 17, 2019 to death, finding the former head of state guilty of committing high treason in 2007.

In recent years, Pervez Musharraf lived in the United Arab Emirates. It was reported that she went to the UAE for treatment. Since then, according to investigators, he has been in Dubai, a fugitive from justice in connection with criminal charges against him.
