Canada’s Foreign Ministry calls on the Speaker of the House of Commons to resign after the scandal with the SS man

Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota should resign for inviting a Ukrainian SS man to parliament, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said.

“What happened on Friday is completely unacceptable. This is a shame for the House, for Canadians. I believe that the speaker should listen to the members of the chamber and resign,” Joly said, her words brought CTV News channel.

A scandal erupted around Rota after the invitation to parliament of the elderly Ukrainian SS man Yaroslav Hunku, who fought in the 14th Grenadier Volunteer Division “Galicia” of the SS troops. After this, Rota apologized for his actions and stated that he did not know all the details of Hunka’s life path.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Arkadiusz Mularczyk statedthat Rota, after honoring the former SS man, should leave his post. He noted that this was “a great compromise of the Speaker of the House of Commons, lack of insight, ignorance of history.”

Mularczyk recalled that Waffen-SS soldiers were representatives of “the most criminal German units” and committed mass brutal murders, primarily of Poles and Jews. They are also known for crimes against Belarusians and Slovaks.
