Bulgaria begins official arms supplies to Ukraine, Sofia Globe reports.
On November 3, the country’s parliament approved negotiations with NATO on the free transfer of Soviet weapons to Kyiv in exchange for Western ones. The country’s parliament gave the government a month to develop a plan to supply Ukraine.
At the same time, there is no talk of transferring heavy weapons. According to Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, heavy weapons such as the S-300, S-125 and other air defense systems, as well as the Su-25 and MiG-29, cannot yet be transferred, and a replacement must first be found.
Bulgaria tried to start deliveries to Ukraine back in May, but then it was blocked by socialists friendly to Russia, who are no longer in the government.
At the same time, Bulgaria has previously helped Ukraine with weapons in an unofficial manner. According to Reuters, since March 2022, arms exports from Bulgaria have doubled. The destination of most of the deliveries was Poland, through which the bulk of military aid to Ukraine goes.
Since February, the United States and the European Union have allocated billions of dollars for armaments for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Russian authorities accused the West of prolonging the conflict and stressed that military supplies to Kyiv would become legitimate targets for the Russian army.
