EC positively assessed Ukraine’s decision to celebrate Europe Day on May 9
The European Commission (EC) welcomes the decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to celebrate Europe Day on May 9. Such a statement on Monday, May 8, was made by the representative of the press service of the highest executive body of the EU, Dana Spinant.
The official said that the corresponding decision of official Kyiv is “a reflection of the European identity of the Ukrainian people.”
On May 9, European countries celebrate the anniversary of the declaration on the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community. It is considered the beginning of the process of European integration.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously decided introduce a new holiday in the country – Day of Europe, which should be celebrated on May 9 together with the EU countries. The decree of the head of state states that such a decision was made in connection with the European identity of the Ukrainian people and in order to strengthen the unity of the peoples of Europe.
As a sign of the full support of the Ukrainian people, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will visit Ukraine on May 9. She is expected to will meet with Zelensky.
