Brazil refused to comply with the German request for the supply of tank ammunition.
According to the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, the decision was made by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after a meeting of the representative of the Workers’ Party with the commanders-in-chief of the Armed Forces and Defense Minister José Musio Monteiro.
The meeting took place on January 20 on the eve of the resignation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces, Julio Cesar Arruda, who raised the issue of transferring ammunition for tanks to the FRG.
As emphasized by the publication, da Silva expressed concern that these shells could then be delivered to Ukraine, which was promised Western tanks. “Don’t provoke the Russians,” the newspaper reports the words of the Brazilian leader.
