According to a report from Bloomberg, the European Union intends to develop a tripartite plan to provide Ukraine with the necessary ammunition worth one billion euros. Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service, proposed to allocate funds from the European Peace Fund for the purchase of 155 mm artillery shells for Ukraine. EU defense ministers will discuss the issue at an informal meeting on March 7 in Stockholm.
According to the document, Borrell offered the EU countries a favorable reimbursement rate of up to 90% if the ammunition was delivered by a certain date. He also noted the importance of joint purchases to ensure the supply of weapons to Ukraine and replenish the stocks of weapons of the EU member states.
The supply of shells to Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting between US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this week. From the US side, they are urging their European allies to act faster. Estonia also opined that the EU countries should invest about 4 billion euros for the joint purchase of 1 million shells, raising the issue earlier this year.
