The transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine is not on the agenda in the European Union, this issue may cause controversy among the countries of the Commonwealth. This was announced by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
“My job is to try to reach consensus, and one of the best ways to achieve this is not to take positions that could jeopardize it,” he said (quote by El Pais).
Borrell stressed that now the EU countries should focus on sending previously announced tanks to Ukraine.
Borrell’s statement came after the words of French President Emmanuel Macron, who did not rule out the possibility of supplying combat aircraft to Ukraine. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation considered the French leader’s statement is absurd.
By data Politico, after the announcement of the transfer of tanks to Kyiv, NATO countries began to actively discuss the possibility of supplying fighters. Among the ardent supporters of the idea of sending fighters to Ukraine, the Baltic countries are mentioned. The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said earlier that Poland was giving “positive signals” on this issue. However, later Polish President Andrzej Duda declaredthat the country’s authorities will not transfer F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
A similar position is held in the USA and Germany. US President Joe Biden previously rejected the possibility of supplying Kiveu with fighter jets, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for an end to discussions on this issue in Germany.
