Borrell: no one is keeping Hungary in the EU

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, commented on the words of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about EU pressure on the republic, saying that no one is keeping Hungary in the EU.

“Nobody obliges Hungary to be a member of the EU. This is a free choice,” Borrell said at the Europe and World conference. The broadcast was on the website of the European Commission.

The diplomat stressed that he “does not see any similarity” between the Soviet occupation of Budapest and the current situation.

On October 23, during a speech dedicated to the anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising, Orbán stated, that the EU pressure on Hungary is reminiscent of the actions of the Soviet authorities, but at the same time is a “bad modern parody.” According to him, the EU is seeking to impose on Hungary a model of liberal democracy, which the Hungarians do not accept.

Hungary has been a member of the EU since 2004. After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the EU introduced large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation, and the Commonwealth countries began to supply weapons to Kyiv. At the same time, Hungary refused military assistance to Ukraine and more than once raised the issue of easing restrictions, which is why it came under pressure from Brussels.

At the beginning of October this year, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry stated that Budapest was “under constant pressure” from Brussels. In particular, the EU authorities require Hungary to buy as little oil and gas as possible from Russia, but at the same time does not provide assistance in diversifying the sources and routes of energy supplies.
