The EU is not satisfied with China’s neutral position on the issue of resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. About this in a written interview with the South China Morning Post newspaper reported EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

“Being neutral in this case is like watching from the sidelines as the fox enters the henhouse and waiting for the outcome,” he said, noting that the EU is not entirely convinced of China’s neutral position in the conflict.

At the same time, Borrell emphasized that he does not expect the Chinese authorities to advance the European line. “We know the Chinese calculations and constraints behind this conflict, as well as their tendency to view it through the lens of competition with the United States,” he added. According to him, China is also not interested in supporting the Russian point of view.

Borrell emphasized that China “can do more” to make sure in Kyiv that Beijing is not on Moscow’s side. Among the possible options for participation, Borrell named participation in the peace formula proposed by Ukraine. At the same time, the diplomat called the participation of the Chinese side in the negotiations on Ukraine, which took place in early August in Saudi Arabia, a “good step.”

In early August, two-day negotiations between national security advisers and political advisers were held in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), where Ukraine presented its “peace formula.” About 40 states took part in the meeting, including China. Russia was not represented at these negotiations. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov reported that Moscow will monitor these negotiations. How noted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the Saudi authorities notified Russia in advance about the meeting in Jeddah, and also explained its holding by the desire to convey to Kiev and the West the futility of negotiations on a settlement without the participation of Moscow.
