Borrell: EU may approve another 5 billion euros to help Ukraine

The European Union may agree on the allocation of another 5 billion euros (about $5.3 billion at the exchange rate as of October 2) for military assistance to Ukraine by the end of 2023. EU diplomacy head Josep Borrell announced this at a press conference.
“I have proposed a new package of military aid under the European Peace Fund in the amount of 5 billion euros for next year. I hope that we will reach an agreement before the end of the year, when EU countries will have to agree on a multi-year budget,” Borrell said (quote according to TASS).
He added that the EU plans to continue to cooperate with the Ukrainian authorities in the areas of the defense industry, the deactivation of explosive devices and the fight against disinformation. Borrell also confirmed that the EU plans to train about 40,000 Ukrainian fighters, including pilots for F-16 fighter jets, by the end of the year.
Earlier, the US Congress adopted the country’s short-term budget, which does not take into account military assistance to Ukraine. After this, Borrell said that he was surprised by the decision of the American authorities. According to him, the EU will continue to support Kyiv even without the participation of the United States.
The head of European diplomacy also said that since last year the EU has allocated military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 85 billion euros ($85.9 billion at the exchange rate).
