The EU has informed member states that it is “highly likely” that it will not be able to fulfill Ukraine’s request for 1 million artillery shells in the near future. writes Bloomberg, citing sources.
The European External Action Service told diplomats this week that the EU would not be able to implement its delivery plan by March 2024, agency sources said. Initially, the stated goal was to supply such a number of shells within a year from the beginning of the Russian air defense system. The plan was expected to be implemented through supplies from European reserves, and then by increasing production, Bloomberg points out.
The agency notes that despite the expiration of half of the stated period, the plan has only been completed by 30%, “and taking into account the volume of contracts signed up to this point, it may be disrupted.”
Bloomberg indicates that a representative of the European External Action Service declined to give an official comment, citing confidentiality of the information.
