Bloomberg: EU mulls alternative plan to help Ukraine

The European Union is considering an alternative plan for financing Ukraine if Hungary continues to block the release of a tranche of aid worth $50 billion euros, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
The new proposal will reportedly include national guarantees from EU member states to attract funding from markets.
At the same time, Spain, which currently holds the presidency of the EU and the European Commission, advocates an agreement within the framework of a long-term budget.
Earlier, Hungary’s position was criticized by EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn from the rostrum of the European Parliament, who said that Budapest “cannot stop” the EU in its intentions.
“Of course, everything can be more complicated if you think about Ukraine. Of course, we can find a solution involving only 26 member states,” he said.
Hungary accuses Ukraine of corruption and continues to block aid. Budapest says it is ready to discuss assistance to Ukraine “in the short term of six months to a year,” but is not ready to agree even to the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
