According to Will Mathis, against the backdrop of a gradual refusal to purchase Russian gas, the EU countries decided to try to replace fuel supplies with the help of wind energy. This is facilitated by the fact that EU member states are simultaneously trying to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere in order to fight global warming.

About a year ago, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark issued a declaration accelerating the construction of offshore wind farms to increase capacity to 65 gigawatts by 2030 – about five times more than today. Britain also decided to build wind turbines to increase generation by 50 gigawatts. However, on April 24, European leaders came to the conclusion that it would most likely not be possible to fully realize these ambitious plans, Mr. Mathis clarifies.

Refusal of Russian energy carriers actively discussed EU countries within the framework of sanctions that are introduced in response to the military operation carried out by the Russian Federation in Ukraine. Head of European Diplomacy Josep Borrell noted that the EU has already significantly reduced its dependence on Russian energy carriers.
