Bild: Russia remained the largest supplier of coal to Germany last year

Russia in 2022 remained the largest coal supplier for Germany, despite the sanctions imposed against Moscow. This is with reference to the data of the German Union of Coal Importers writes Bild newspaper.
According to the data cited by the publication, Germany’s coal purchases last year exceeded purchases in 2021 by 8%, 44.4 million tons of coal were delivered to the country. In particular, deliveries from South Africa increased by 278% to 3.9 million tons, and from Colombia by 210% to 7.2 million tons. In addition, Australia and the United States exported 6.3 and 9.4 million tons of coal to Germany, respectively.
Russian coal exports to Germany declined in 2022, but the country remained Berlin’s largest supplier of this raw material, Bild points out.
“Despite the war and sanctions, 13 million tons came to Germany – a drop of 37%,” the article says.
In early April 2022, the EU included in the fifth package of sanctions due to the Northeast Military District in Ukraine an embargo on the import of Russian coal, the ban has been in effect since August 10. As a result, Russian coal companies have reengineered their logistics to redirect significant volumes abandoned by Europeans to the Asian market.
In anticipation of the embargo on coal imports from the Russian Federation, the EU countries increased its supplies. In March-May 2022, the block purchased 28% more coal than in the same period last year. Deliveries amounted to 29.4 million tons, according to Vedomosti’s calculations based on UN Comtrade data. In monetary terms, deliveries in March-May increased by 3.9 times to $9.3 billion. According to UN Comtrade, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands were the main coal importers.
According to the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, coal exports from Russia in 2021 amounted to 223 million tons (+5.7% compared to 2020). At the end of 2022, exports fell by 7%, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reported on January 11. That is, coal supplies abroad last year amounted to about 207 million tons.
