The United States supports the wording proposed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Ukraine’s future membership in the alliance. This statement was made by US President Joe Biden before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
“We agree with the proposed wording regarding the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO in the future. We are committed to the further unification of NATO,” he said (quote by CNN).
According to the channel, Biden spoke seconds after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized NATO’s wording on Twitter. According to him, only the possibility of inviting Ukraine to NATO is being discussed, but not its membership in the alliance. Zelenskiy was also outraged by the lack of timelines for both the invitation and the country’s membership. The Ukrainian leader concluded that the NATO countries are not ready for such a step, calling the “uncertainty” of the alliance a weakness.
Earlier today Stoltenberg offered cancel Ukraine’s action plan for joining the bloc in order to shorten the accession process. According to him, “this will be a positive and strong signal about the path to membership” for Kyiv. In the Kremlin warnedthat the admission of Ukraine to NATO could potentially lead to a threat to European security.
The NATO summit takes place from 11 to 12 July in Vilnius. It was reported that a number of important decisions would be made during the event, and the countries would also discuss Ukraine’s entry into NATO. In particular, Stoltenberg announced the speech of NATO countries with a unified position on Ukraine’s membership in the organization.
