US President Joe Biden signed protocols on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, transmits Reuters agency. Countries applied to join the alliance in mid-May.
Last week, the US Senate voted to ratify NATO membership for Finland and Sweden, with 95 people voting in favor and one against. Full ratification of membership requires that all NATO member countries approve the relevant documents at the national level.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that more than 20 countries have already ratified the documents on the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO. He added that so far this is the fastest process in the history of countries joining NATO. He did not specify which countries had not yet ratified the accession.
On June 30, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the Turkish parliament would not consider approving the applications of Sweden and Finland to join NATO if the countries did not fulfill their obligations. He also added that Istanbul will closely monitor compliance with the agreements, if they are not fulfilled, then the proposal for ratification will not be sent to parliament for consideration.
Sweden, in particular, undertook to extradite Turkey 73 people from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, who, according to the Turkish government, are involved in terrorist activities.
