Biden promised Pashinyan to strengthen security cooperation

The United States and Armenia will continue to strengthen cooperation in the field of security, US President Joe Biden said in a letter to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Letter conveyed USAID head Samantha Power.

In the letter, the American president also noted that he asked Power to confirm to Pashinyan the US desire for a stable peace in the region, guaranteeing the independence, territorial integrity and democracy of Armenia.

Earlier today, the Russian Foreign Ministry statedthat Pashinyan, in his message on the occasion of Armenia’s Independence Day on September 24, made unacceptable attacks against Russia, trying to shift responsibility for failures in domestic and foreign policy to Moscow. The Foreign Ministry believes that Pashinyan previously “succumbed to the exhortations” of the EU and recognized Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh, thereby violating the tripartite agreements of November 2020.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Pashinyan’s words that he has questions for Russian peacekeepers, stated his disagreement with the attempt to blame the Russian side for the events in Nagorno-Karabakh. Peskov stressed that Moscow will continue dialogue with Yerevan at various levels.

Earlier in September, joint Armenian-American military exercises Eagle Partner 2023 took place in Armenia. The republic’s Ministry of Defense reported that during the exercises, actions to stabilize the conflicting parties “by performing peacekeeping tasks” will be worked out.

On September 9, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorism measures” necessary for the “restoration of the constitutional order” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The next day, Karabakh authorities announced the conclusion of agreements on a complete ceasefire. On September 21, negotiations were held in Yevlakh between the delegation of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities.
