US President Joe Biden said that China expects retaliatory steps from the US and its allies if Beijing tries to change the status of Taiwan unilaterally.
“We will continue to help Taiwan defend itself. There is a clear understanding among most of our allies that if China takes unilateral action, there will be a response.” said Biden at a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima (TASS quote).
Washington has no plans to ease sanctions against China to improve relations with Beijing, the American president added.
China considers Taiwan to be its province, so the PRC government opposes any contacts between the island’s administration and countries with which Beijing has diplomatic relations.
In August 2022, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited the island. After her visit, the situation in Taiwan escalated. The Chinese Foreign Ministry protested, and the PRC announced military exercises in the waters of Taiwan. Later, a delegation of US congressmen and Republican Senator Marsha Blackbear visited the island. The PRC said that such steps violate the “one China” principle. The Foreign Ministry promised to take “serious measures” to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In May, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang declaredthat in November last year, after meetings in Bali between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden, the United States adopted a series of misguided words and actions that undermined the hard-won positive momentum of Sino-US relations.
