According to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Washington is in contact with the Russian authorities to prevent the use of nuclear weapons.
He made such a statement after the Wall Street Journal published materials that claimed that Sullivan was holding closed talks with the Russian presidential aide for international affairs Yuri Ushakov, as well as Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev.
“We had the opportunity to hold contacts with the Russian side at a high level. The purpose of these negotiations is to reduce the risk of nuclear escalation. We tried to convey to the Russian leadership what the consequences of its possible use would be. We did not disclose the channels through which these contacts were conducted, so that they protect,” the adviser to the American president explained.
