Voting has started in the first round of the presidential election in Finland
Voting has begun in Finland in the first round of the presidential election – polling stations are open from 9.00 (10.00 Moscow time) to 20.00 (21.00 Moscow time).
There are 9 candidates represented in the elections. The main struggle is between ex-Prime Minister Alexander Stubb and former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. According to a survey by public broadcaster Yle, 27% of voters are likely to vote for Stubb, and 23% for Haavisto. Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho is in third place with 18% support.
The President of Finland is elected for a six-year term. 4.2 million citizens have the right to vote in the country.
Sauli Niinistö’s term expires in February; the politician held office for two consecutive terms.
