Berlin is not yet ready to recognize a Palestinian state

The German authorities are not yet ready to support the full recognition of a Palestinian state, continuing to adhere to the principle of “two states for two peoples.”
This statement was made on August 16 by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after a conversation in Berlin with the head of the Palestinian National Autonomy, Mahmoud Abbas.
Thus, Scholz did not support Abbas’s proposal that the EU and the UN recognize the Palestinian territories as an independent state. According to Scholz, the Palestinian Authority has observer status at the UN, and “now is not the time to change this situation.” All further political steps in this direction must be agreed with the Israeli side, stressed in Berlin.
