Basta celebrated his birthday with a symphonic battle: he was presented with a violin with rhinestones

As part of his spring capital blitzkrieg, Basta again turned on the heat: first at the House of Music, and then at Megasport. Two dates were celebrated on a grand scale at once: the 25th anniversary of the first hit “My Game”, and the concert with a symphony orchestra coincided with the birthday of our hip-hop mogul. It didn’t affect the set list, but some secular circumstances still took place.
At the sound check, the birthday man was presented with an expensive souvenir violin of Italian porcelain from the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. The inscription “Vasily, happy birthday”, the lines “Do it contrary, Do it by hand, turn the world upside down, overturn the sky” from the hit “Samsara” and a generous scattering of Swarovski crystals depicting the strings on the fretboard. In terms of style and degree of dazzle, the present asked, of course, to completely different hands – Kirkorov’s, Shikadamov’s, and not to the gloomy Vasily with his “street style” even in the stage incarnation. Although … Severe-looking rappers now also know how to appreciate what glitters. We tasted the taste of trends and time. However, in its original “cottage” essence, chic, glitter, cars and other gold were the birthmarks of the genre when it was still in its infancy in the distant and dark slums of Los Angeles, but that’s another story. Whatever it was, but the kitsch violin fell into Vasily’s hands like a glove. The birthday boy was pleased, and the orchestra thus not only showed a sign of attention, but also expressed professional respect for the star collaborator in such a dazzlingly rich way.
The concert began with a powerful chant from the hall “Happy birthday!”, the audience, of course, did not leave the artist without flowers, but the best gift, of course, was the full house and choral singing. Spectators who paid for reassuringly expensive tickets probably have every right to be lazy, but in this case, the vocal cords and flashlights were always at the ready, which turned out to be very handy: sometimes it was only thanks to the choral singing of the public that it was possible to understand the lyrics, since the artist’s voice is annoying transformed by powerful speakers into a uniform sound mess. But more on that below.
About two hours pass between the opening “I Look at the Sky” and the final “At Dawn” (a cover of the ever-relevant, as it turned out, hit of the Alliance group), and during this time the artist himself, his group, backing vocalists and the orchestra create an impressive musical abundance.
A concert with an orchestra is a very troublesome business. All songs need to be actually reassembled, and the result is not always unambiguous. For example, for a chanson with the lines “Tell me, mother, how much my life is worth,” the orchestra is still perceived as too pompous and expensive packaging for an item that not only can do without it, but looks more like Lisa Doolittle in Professor Higgins’ mansion when she had not yet become a washed lady, but was a clumsy mess in exquisite mansions.
But in other situations, the game is really worth the candle. So, “My Broken Dreams” and “The Amazing World” turned into old-fashioned luxurious dance numbers. The symphony orchestra conducted by conductor Alexei Nyaga, who turned out to be a showman no weaker than the frontman, together with the band masterfully gave out something in between funk and disco, and there was a feeling that at least Donna Summer herself would fly out onto the stage to dance and sing along. However, Vasily turned out to be quite convincing in a frivolous disco dance, which, until quite recently, did not seem to be part of his boyish-sentimental doctrine.
The audience, which, taking into account the place and status of the event, has slightly grown in age and respectability, from the very beginning was ready to confess their love to the artist and shine with the knowledge of all the texts by heart. The usefulness of the skill has already been mentioned. Even with four ears, the ZD team, frankly, did not always make out the lines, although the orchestra sounded perfect in all its complex and brilliant orchestral splendor. Such an imbalance was a little confusing and inspired to search for explanations for the current situation.
It turned out that the perfectionism of the artist and his team, interpreted in its own way, was to blame. For two concerts “at the opera”, Basta & Co. brought their entire sound apparatus, designed for large concert arenas, and neglected the basic equipment of the hall, ideally tailored to the characteristics of its acoustics so that even collaborations between a symphony orchestra and rock performers sound flawless. So it was on many landmark projects of the Russian Philharmonic – from Bi-2 to Rick Wakeman and many others. As a result, the “stadium” technique was clearly confused in the academic space, where everyone performs very successfully – from classical to rock, but this time the stars were against it, and for two evenings the sound engineers did not manage to cope with the problems that arose.
However, the sound is successfully treated by hits and a fan choir. As a result, “My Game”, “Samsara”, “Graduation” and other stadium chants worked well even against the background of the organ, and even at the “continuation of the banquet” in Megasport, everything fell into place anyway, but without symphonic frills, which, nevertheless, have become a very elegant attribute of Basta’s current concert session in Moscow.
