There is no substantive discussion on the issue of creating a separate federal district for the annexed regions, but such conversations are underway, declared “RIA Novosti” Acting Governor of the Zaporozhye region Yevgeny Balitsky.
“There has not yet been a substantive discussion about the federal district, some talk is underway. In this case, I think it would not be very correct for me to speak my vision until the program is presented, which regions and republics will be included in which federal district,” he said.
Balitsky spoke about the possible creation of a new federal district on September 30, 2022, on the day of the signing of agreements on the entry of the DPR, LDR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions into Russia. In the fall, Vedomosti sources reported that a new federal district, Crimean, could be created in Russia. It was assumed that it would include the peninsula itself and the territories annexed as a result of referendums.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said in early March that the decision to create a new federal district had not yet been made. According to him, “various options are being explored” and decisions will be made in a timely manner “if necessary.” Also on this subject spoke out Vladimir Saldo, acting head of the Kherson region, and Vladimir Konstantinov, head of the Crimean parliament, who said that the issue of creating a federal district was “already overdue.”
