Austria will not extradite military-age men to Ukraine. If Kyiv sends a written request demanding that refugees be sent home, Vienna will ignore it, reported Austrian publication Express with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic.
“This would be an attempt to interfere with our asylum system and our nationhood. Austria will never agree to this and will not send Ukrainians to their homeland,” the publication quoted a representative of the department as saying.
According to the Austrian Ministry of Internal Affairs, there are currently about 14,000 men from Ukraine aged 18 to 54 in the republic. The number of refugee women reaches 67,000. In total, the country accepted 101,629 Ukrainian citizens, including children and the elderly.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky criticized the work of military commissariats and was outraged by the lack of conscripts who could be sent to the front. He fired all the officials of the regional conscription commissions and replaced them with military personnel who had participated in the hostilities.
Zelensky condemned corruption in military commissariats and called it high treason. More than 110 officials from military registration and enlistment offices have come under criminal charges in Ukraine. Then in Ukraine they started talking about the possibility of extraditing men of military age who had gone abroad to join the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
