Australia imposes new sanctions against Russia

Australia extended sanctions to 45 citizens and companies of Russia. About it says in a statement posted on the Australian Foreign Office website.

“Australia today imposed targeted sanctions on 35 organizations in the defense, technology and energy sectors of Russia, as well as 10 individuals, including Russian ministers and high-ranking officials, as well as high-ranking military personnel in Belarus,” the report said.

The ministry explained that the sanctions were imposed, in particular, on Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and high-ranking Belarusian military officials, as well as on the CEO of Russia’s largest helicopter manufacturer and on the company itself.

In addition, among the enterprises that fell under the sanctions are suppliers of technologies and advanced equipment of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as companies involved in nuclear energy and the extraction of Arctic resources.

Australia joined the US and European sanctions after the start of a special operation in Ukraine in February 2022. The sanctions are imposed on the country’s metallurgy, energy, financial and defense sectors, and also include restrictions on the export and import of products.

Earlier, the Australian Foreign Ministry clarified that for all the time the country has imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 individuals and companies. In addition, the government plans to introduce a ban on the export of equipment and spare parts to Russia. The ministry added that the sanctions “target sectors of economic and strategic importance to Russia.”

At the same time, the Russian embassy in Australia called all the imposed sanctions are futile. The diplomatic mission stressed that the restrictions will not be able to prevent Moscow from eliminating threats to its national security.
