ATOR: As Booking.com exits, direct hotel bookings double in 2022

The share of online bookings on hotel websites was 52% in 2022, which is almost twice as much as in 2021 (24%), reports Association of Tour Operators of Russia with reference to the research data of the national tour operator “Alean” and the company TravelLine. ATOR said that the growth of this indicator is associated with the departure of the online booking service Booking.com from the Russian market.
“In March 2022, a massive restructuring of the online accommodation booking market began. Channels that guests knew about, but preferred booking.com, took its place and divided the vacated market among themselves,” the ATOR press service reports the words of TravelLine CEO Alexander Galochkin.
Booking.com announced its exit from the Russian market on March 5, 2022. CEO Glenn Vogel explained this by a military operation in Ukraine. According to him, difficulties with doing business have also increased in the Russian Federation. In March, the suspension of activities in Russia also announced Airbnb accommodation booking service.
Almost immediately after the departure of Booking.com, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko instructed Rostourism and the Ministry of Digital Development should start creating a domestic analogue of this service in Russia. In the Russian Federation, there are already alternative online platforms that can be used to reserve a hotel or apartment, including Yandex.Travel, Ostrovok, and Sutochno.ru.
