Assad recognized new territories of Russia

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that Damascus would recognize the new borders of Russia after the annexation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The Syrian leader noted that his country’s position on this issue is clear and decisive, and is based on historical facts. In particular, he pointed out that these territories were historically Russian, even before they joined Russia.
Assad recalled that these territories were transferred to Ukraine about 100 years ago and that Russian citizens live on them. He also said that Syria recognized these regions even before they joined Russia.
Recall that last year in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, referendums were held on joining Russia. According to the results of processing the ballots, more than 90% of the population voted for joining Russia. After that, Vladimir Putin signed agreements with the heads of regions on their admission to the country.
