In northwestern Nigeria, armed men kidnapped more than 30 people, including 24 female students, after attacking the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara state, AFP reported.
Dozens of militants entered three women’s dormitories at the university in the village of Sabon Gida on Friday, locals said. The attackers also captured nine welders working in the new university building.
The militants took 24 female students along with two men from the dormitories. It is reported that one of them is an employee of the educational institution.
The arriving Nigerian military, according to the agency, entered into a firefight with the attackers. It is reported that some of the kidnappers drove the hostages away to an unknown direction.
Army spokesman General Ibrahim Yahai said six people had been freed.
