Argentine President-elect Javier Miley and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron spoke by telephone on Wednesday but did not discuss the disputed Malvinas (Falkland) Islands. This was announced by Miley’s foreign policy adviser Diana Mondino, who will be appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“We did not specifically address the issue of the Malvinas Islands. We noted the need to work to resolve all existing conflicts,” she said in an interview with TN TV channel.

According to Mondino, the Malvina topic was not discussed due to the brevity of the conversation. She also stressed that the new Argentine government will seek to restore sovereignty over the islands in accordance with international law and will not recognize the residents’ right to self-determination. “We view the islands as part of Argentine territory and therefore other parts of Argentina do not have the right to self-determination,” she added.

The Falkland Islands (Malvinas), located in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, have been the subject of a territorial dispute between Argentina and Great Britain for 200 years. In April 1982, war began between the countries. The South American republic was defeated, losing 649 troops in two and a half months. The British side suffered 255 casualties.

In March 2013, the vast majority of residents of the archipelago voted in a referendum in favor of the territory belonging to the United Kingdom. Argentina did not recognize the results of the referendum.
