The Declaration of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Ministers of Trade of the APEC countries was adopted in a compromise form, taking into account the position of Russia, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Vladimir Ilyichev said on the sidelines of the summit.
“The APEC ministerial declaration was adopted in a compromise form and taking into account the position of Russia, whose delegation managed to prevent the inclusion of openly confrontational language in the document,” Ilyichev noted (quote by Interfax).
According to him, members of the G7 actively advocated the mention of the conflict in Ukraine in the declaration. “APEC is an economic structure that does not deal with the political agenda. Especially from the point of view of regional coverage – the issue is clearly not in the APEC line,” the deputy minister said.
As a result, according to him, the corresponding clause was adopted in a compromise version, similar to the G20 declaration in Indonesia. In addition, a fairly large block is dedicated to the WTO, primarily to unblocking the activities of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB), Ilyichev added.
The APEC summit at the level of country leaders and heads of delegations takes place on November 18-19.
The G20 previously agreed on a joint statement following the Bali summit. The G20 countries, which condemned the conflict in Ukraine, noted that the fighting “causes great human suffering” and also has a negative impact on the global economy.
At the same time, according to a joint statement, a number of countries expressed a different opinion on the “situation and sanctions.” The summit participants stressed that the G20 meeting in Bali is not a platform “to address security issues.”
