AP: Sudan’s Rapid Reaction Force seizes presidential palace

The Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) of Sudan announced that they had taken control of two airports and the Khartoum Palace of the Republic, the residence of the President, reported Associated Press, citing a statement from the RRF.

The agency clarifies that the RRF in their statements reported that they had allegedly taken control of the airport of the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, as well as the airport and air base in Meroe. AP notes that they were unable to confirm these claims. Commercial flights bound for Khartoum airport turned around and returned to their departure airports.

The SBR accused the regular army of attacking its forces at one of the bases in the south of Khartoum. The Sudanese army also reports that RRF troops tried to attack its forces in the southern part of the capital.

Last week in Sudan it was planned to sign an agreement on the establishment of a transitional civil authority in the country. The signing of the document was delayed due to the fact that the regular army and paramilitaries cannot agree on integration. It is assumed that the RRF, headed by General Mohammed Daglo, should be integrated into the ranks of the army, but it has not been determined how this process will take place and which body will control it. “The merger is a key condition of Sudan’s unsigned transition agreement,” writes AP.

Rivalries between the army and the RRF arose during the reign of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in 2019. clarifies RIA Novosti, SBR previously reported personally to the ex-president.

The publication clarifies that in December 2022 in Sudan, the military and the opposition signed a framework agreement providing for the appointment of a prime minister, the adoption of an interim constitution and the subsequent two-year transition period, after which general elections will be held.
