AP publishes a guide for journalists on the use of AI – Kommersant

The Associated Press (AP) news agency developed rules and guidelines for their journalists and those working in other media on how to use artificial intelligence (AI) in working with news. Commenting on these recommendations in her blog, AP Vice President Amanda Barrett stressed that the agency does not see AI as “a replacement for journalists in any way.”

According to the guidelines, AP journalists are allowed to experiment with OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot with discretion, but they can’t be used to create content that can be published. Any AI-generated content should be judged by journalists as having not been rigorously reviewed, checked against AP standards, and rigorously assessed for its content. AP rules prohibit the use of AI to make changes to photo, video, or audio content. In addition, you can not publish images created with the help of AI if they do not accurately reflect reality. The rules prohibit journalists from giving confidential or classified information to the AI. The agency also encourages its staff to review material received from other sources to ensure that it does not contain content generated by artificial intelligence. The AP reminds that AI facilitates the dissemination of false or deliberately misleading information. Therefore, the authors of the guide recommend that journalists be careful and consider such content with a grain of salt, try to find out the source of the original content, verify the source of images, etc. If there is any doubt about the authenticity of the material, it is recommended not to use it at all.

Meanwhile, AP entered into a licensing agreement with OpenAI, under which the agency allowed its publications to be used to train AI models. In addition, AP is already using artificial intelligence to write collections of short financial and sports news, and the agency, together with a number of other media outlets, has signed an open letter calling for transparency in the use of data to train AI models. At the same time, for example, The New York Times has restricted the use of its content for AI training.
