Antonov explained the danger of suspending Russia’s membership in the FATF

The suspension of Russia’s membership in the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF) creates several threats at once, said Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.
According to him, the main danger lies in the potential erosion of the global architecture in the field of combating money laundering. Antonov said that the United States did not understand the danger of this step, which could also lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of countering the financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
He noted that the decision to suspend Russia’s membership in the FATF is welcome, first of all, in Washington, and the statement by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who welcomed the FATF decision, is “unprofessional and irresponsible.”
Antonov said that over ten years of work in the FATF, the Russian Federation has done a lot to promote effective standards in the field of combating criminal proceeds and has created one of the most advanced national anti-money laundering systems.
