American Whelan, convicted in Russia of espionage, said that his homeland abandoned him
American citizen Paul Whelan, previously detained in Russia, accused the US government of betrayal and unsuccessful exchange for other prisoners.
In an interview with a TV channel BBC News he said that the administration of former President Donald Trump failed to exchange him for Viktor Bout, while Russia was ready for such an exchange.
Whelan called it a “serious betrayal” and said his life was slipping away while the US “goes back and forth like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.” He also noted that all the promises of the US authorities “turned out to be empty”, and his case is moving to the end of the queue.
Whelan spent more than five years in a Russian prison and believes he could have been home years ago if the United States had taken more active action to free him.
