Singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte has died at the age of 96 at his New York City home. The cause of death was chronic heart failure. The newspaper reported The New York Times (NYT), citing his press secretary Ken Sunshine.
Harry Belafonte was born in New York on March 1, 1927 to immigrants from Jamaica and Martinique. During the Second World War, he served in the US Navy, despite being a minor. After demobilization, he enrolled in acting classes in New York and began acting in plays and musicals at local theaters.
In 1949, Harry Belafonte made his debut as a pop singer, but quickly switched to folk music. In 1953, Harry Belafonte made his first film appearance in The Bright Road. In May 1956, Mr. Belafonte released his third album, Calypso, which was the first music album to sell over 1 million copies.
In the 1960s, Harry Belafonte focused on participating in the African American rights movement in the United States. He has also been critical of US foreign policy and the activities of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, including his decision to launch the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
