American expert: Western tanks will not change the course of the conflict in Ukraine

Western tanks transferred to Ukraine will not change the course of the conflict, said Michael Kofman, director of research programs on Russia at the US Center for Naval Research.

In a commentary to the newspaper Der Spiegel, he said that these tanks will not be a “magic wand” that will turn the tide.

According to him, at this stage, the importance of even such weapons as HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems has decreased, since the maximum effect from the use of weapons comes when they are just starting to be used.

Kofman pointed out that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had already lost thousands of tanks. “I don’t believe that Western tanks are superior to Russian tanks to such an extent as to change the whole situation,” he said.

Earlier, the German authorities announced an agreement with several European countries on joint deliveries of 20-25 Leopard A1 tanks by the summer and more than 100 by the beginning of 2024. In total, Berlin expects to transfer to Kyiv 178 Leopard tanks of the first generation and 14 Leopard 2 type A6.
