Amazon and Microsoft face UK antitrust investigation

British telecommunications regulator Ofcom announced today, April 5, which completed the audit of the activities of Amazon and Microsoft in the cloud services market in the UK. The regulator concluded that American corporations dominate the market and set rules that prevent customers from switching to other operators or using the services of several cloud providers at once. Based on this, Ofcom recommended that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) conduct its own antitrust investigation against the two companies.
Ofcom has found that Amazon and Microsoft account for 60-70% of the cloud services market in the UK. Their closest pursuer is Google, whose share is 5-10%. As part of its market research, Ofcom found that the above companies charge higher data withdrawal fees from their cloud services than smaller competitors. In addition, their services interact poorly or not at all with competitors’ services, and discount systems keep customers from switching to other providers.
