Almost 85,000 internally displaced persons from Karabakh arrived in Armenia

By the morning of September 29, almost 85,000 people had arrived in Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the press secretary of the Armenian government Nazeli Baghdasaryan on her Facebook page (the social network belongs to the Meta company, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

“As of 6.00 (5.00 Moscow time), 84,770 people arrived from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia,” she wrote.

On the evening of September 28 it was known about 78,354 internally displaced persons who entered Armenia. On the same day, President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) Samvel Shahramanyan signed decree on the termination of its existence from January 1, 2024 and the dissolution of all government structures.

On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of “anti-terrorist measures” necessary for the “restoration of the constitutional order” in Nagorno-Karabakh. Baku demanded the dissolution of the regional government and the withdrawal of Armenian troops. Yerevan denied the presence of its troops in the region. The next day, Karabakh authorities announced the conclusion of agreements on a complete ceasefire.

On September 21, negotiations were held in Yevlakh between the delegation of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh and representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities. The second round took place on September 25 at the base of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Khojaly. The Kremlin previously emphasized that the humanitarian aspect is the most important in the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the latest available data, more than 147,000 people lived in Karabakh in 2017, more than 99% of them ethnic Armenians. Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed confidence that the process of reintegration of the Armenian population of Karabakh will be successful. He emphasizedthat the rights and freedoms of citizens “will be ensured in full.”
