Algeria launches peace initiative to resolve crisis in Niger

Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboun proposed an initiative to resolve the crisis in Niger, stressing that priority must be given to a political solution that excludes the use of force, informed Al Mayadeen TV channel.

“Algeria is ready to develop a comprehensive solution to the Niger crisis that includes a six-month transitional period under the supervision of a civilian authority led by a consensus figure,” said Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

At the same time, Algeria is demanding a return to constitutional order in Niger, and deposed President Mohammed Bazum must also return to power.

Attaf explained that Tebbun’s initiative was made up of six points, including strengthening the principle of the illegality of unconstitutional changes, establishing a six-month time frame for a political solution to guarantee a return to constitutional and democratic order in Niger, and establishing political mechanisms to emerge from the crisis, in addition to providing adequate guarantees to all parties. The initiative also includes intensive consultations with all stakeholders.

On July 27, a military coup took place in Niger. Rebels suspended President of the country Bazum, the head of the presidential guard Abdurakhman Tchiani became the new leader. The government included 21 ministers, the corresponding order was signed 10th of August. On July 31, ECOWAS issued a statement threatening to use force if the rebels did not restore constitutional order and release Bazum within a week. August 6 block ultimatum deadline expired and the military leadership of Niger, fearing a military invasion, closed the country’s airspace. On August 8, French radio station RFI, citing an official in Nigeria, reported that African countries could send 25,000 troops to invade Niger, mostly from Nigeria, whose president “promised zero tolerance for coups.”
