Alexander Sladkovsky: “It is important for the public whether you put your soul into it or not”

When conductor Alexander Sladkovsky accepted an invitation to head the Tatarstan State Symphony Orchestra in 2010, he, by his own admission, saw it as a chance to create the orchestra of his dreams. Although the initial data did not have this at all – demoralized musicians moonlighting on the side, a schedule for a couple of dozen concerts a year, etc.
In 2023, the Tatarstan Symphony Orchestra is one of the country’s leading musical ensembles, whose repertoire includes Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and others, a busy tour schedule, joint performances with star instrumentalists.
In an interview with Vedomosti, Sladkovsky spoke about what builds trust between a conductor and musicians, why he considers Rachmaninoff his guide through life, and how an orchestra is like a football team.
