The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Iran will complete the preparation of a draft comprehensive agreement on bilateral strategic partnership in April, and the signing of the document may take place during the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Tehran in the near future. This was stated on March 29 at a meeting with Lavrov in Moscow by his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
Abdollahian noted the positive role of Moscow in the negotiations on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian Nuclear Program (JCPOA). Lavrov, for his part, stressed the need to resume negotiations on the JCPOA and lift Western sanctions on Tehran. According to Lavrov, Moscow is monitoring Iran’s contacts on the JCPOA with Europe and the United States, but the final decision on the resumption of the “nuclear deal” must be made by all its participants, including Russia and China.
