The acceptance of the African Union (AU) into the G20 (G20) is planned at the 18th summit of the union in Delhi on September 9-10. A point on this is included in the draft final declaration of the leaders of the group, which is being developed. This was reported to Vedomosti by the representative of the President of Russia (Sherpa) in the G20 Svetlana Lukash.
According to her, Moscow was one of the first to support the corresponding application submitted in 2022 by the President of Senegal and the Chairman of the AU, Macky Salem, calling on the leaders of the G20 to upgrade the status of the organization from an observer to a full member. “Russia believes that the implementation of the initiative of the African states will help strengthen the positions of the countries of the world majority and the interests of the global South,” Lukash said. The Sherpa of Russia in the G20 recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin also publicly supported the AU’s application at the Russia-Africa Summit held in St. Petersburg at the end of July 2023.
