Abramchenko spoke out against replacing animal protein with insect larvae

Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko commented on the development of the production of alternatives to animal protein in Russia. She compared the situation in the Russian market with Western countries, noting that crickets and insect larvae are not suitable as protein replacements. It is better to make fish food out of them, the Deputy Prime Minister believes.
“If you’re talking about crickets and insect larvae, then you don’t need to feed people this… We propose making fish food from insects,” she said in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to her, Western countries are reducing support for cattle producers to reduce methane emissions. For this reason, they are trying to find an alternative to animal protein.
Ms. Abramchenko stated that Russia has the opportunity to provide itself with healthy food products and necessary raw materials. As an example, she cited the cultivation of legumes and grain crops rich in plant protein. “There is a segment of manufacturers who are ready to use our grains to make this very “food of the future”, necessary for vegans or athletes. And this direction will develop,” explained the Deputy Prime Minister.
In September 2022, Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov at the Innofood forum in Sochi statedthat the use of plant materials instead of animal protein is a global trend. Then he said that consumers are still cautious about alternative meat. According to him, Russians need to “work with the mentality” to adapt to eating insect protein.
