A Ukrainian soldier captured in Avdiivka called on his compatriots to surrender
Ukrainian soldier Andrei Baburin, captured in Avdiivka, called on his compatriots to surrender in order to survive. The corresponding video footage was published by the Russian Ministry of Defense, showing 21 Ukrainian soldiers who were captured.
Baburin noted that if the order to retreat from the Ukrainian Armed Forces had been received earlier, so many losses could have been avoided, and as a result, Avdievka became “another cauldron” for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The soldier wished his compatriots to return home and “look at what is happening around.” According to him, every Ukrainian soldier must evaluate for himself whether it is worth taking part in the resistance, since he could be abandoned at any moment.
He also admitted that Ukrainian prisoners of war are treated quite normally in captivity.
“The maintenance is normal, sanitation is observed. Food is ok. Nobody is kidding. In principle, everything suits me. It’s not because I’m trying to bend over backwards – I’m telling it like it really is,” he said.
On February 17, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin that the village of Avdeevka had completely come under the control of Russian forces. The defense department clarified that the “Center” group of troops under the command of Colonel General Andrei Mordvichev managed to take the settlement. The Russian Ministry of Defense emphasized that Avdievka was a powerful defensive unit that was created by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
