A group of State Duma deputies from the party “A Just Russia – For Truth” contributed a bill that abolishes the residency requirement for participants in the military operation in Ukraine if they are nominated for senators.
Now, to become a senator, a citizen must live continuously in the region he wants to represent for five years, or live in it for a total of 20 years. But for some categories (for example, diplomats) there is an exception to this rule, the authors of the initiative note.
The deputies propose to extend this exception to the participants of the military operation in Ukraine. As noted in the explanatory note, if the document is adopted, the participants in the special operation will be able to become candidates for senators, regardless of their place of permanent residence.
The bill was sponsored by Just Russia deputies Sergey Mironov, Sergey Kabyshev, Yana Lantratova, Oleg Nilov, Mikhail Delyagin, Andrey Kuznetsov, Nikolai Novichkov, Valery Gartung, Igor Ananskikh and Alexander Aksenenko.
