A draft law on the establishment of the title “Hero City of a Special Military Operation” has been submitted to the State Duma. About it informed LDPR chairman Leonid Slutsky in his Telegram channel.
He explained that such a title is provided for cities whose residents have made a “significant contribution to the implementation of tasks during the NWO” in the DPR and LPR since February 24, 2022, as well as in Zaporozhye and Kherson regions – since September 30 last year. Commemorative steles with the coat of arms of the city will be installed in the hero cities, and museums “dedicated to the heroic deeds and resilience of the inhabitants during the SVO” will also be established.
According to Slutsky, this is a law “about people, the spirit and faith in Russia, who have not been broken.”
At the end of May, the LDPR suggested return the title of “Hero City” and assign it to Donetsk and Lugansk “for the courage and heroism of the inhabitants.” Then Slutsky clarified that the party was preparing the appropriate amendments. Commenting on the initiative, the Kremlin said that the residents of these cities, “certainly <...> show heroism,” and added that their courage should be celebrated. At the same time, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, urged to wait for the results of the legislators’ work on this issue.
The title of “Hero City” was awarded in the USSR to those cities that became famous for their defense during the Great Patriotic War. This title has 12 cities, as well as the Brest Fortress.
The Russian special operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. During the hostilities, Russian troops took full control of the LPR, as well as most of the DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Subsequently, these territories, after holding referenda, became part of Russia. Since October 19, 2022, martial law has been introduced in the regions.
